McHardy family
« on: Wednesday 17 November 21 16:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi I have been researching the McHardy Family who lived near Dufftown. I have an Alexander McHardy born in 1837 and died 1920 but as yet cannot confirm who his father and mother were. I have two possibilities :- Either
1) Alexander McHardy (1806 - 1883) who married an Elizabeth Watt (1815 - 1879) or
2) James McHardy (1800 - 1885) who married a Mary Milne (1800 - ? )
Can anyone help. He was my Great Grandfather and died in Dufftown. One of these gentlemen features on The Glenlivet Project.
Thanks.

Where did Alexander McHardy marry or die? If in Scotland, his death should include his parents' names if known to the informant. Marriage reg should also include his parents' names if after 1855.

Added: Sorry, see you mentioned he died in Dufftown. Were his parents' names not included on his death reg?

If in Scotland, have you found him in the early censuses?

I can't see a death entry on the index for 1920 at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

There is one in 1910 in Mortlach, the registration district where Dufftown is to be found. An Alexander McHardy, aged 72, mother's maiden name Anderson.

The other two possibilities are one in 1918 in Braemar. Maybe connects with this www.findagrave.com/memorial/183232148/alexander-mchardy The other shows in Kirkton Farr (Sutherland) in 1919.

Added: There is a death showing in 1920 for an Alexander McHardy in Mortlach, Banff. Just a little older than he would be if born in 1837. This Alexander shows as aged 86 at death in 1920.

The death is recorded in Mortlach RD on SP.  The SP index gives his age at death as 86. Libindx shows that there were death notices in local papers and that the death was on 26 Dec 1920 at Richmond Villa , Albert Place, Dufftown.

If I have followed the correct census entries was he born in Aberdeenshire?

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

Hi Again.

I now have a record for Alexander McHardy born 26 Jan 1837 in Chapeltown. Parents given as Alexander McHardy of Braeval and Elizabeth Watt. Braeval was the address of the small farm Alexander and Elizabeth McHardy lived in for more than 40 years.

Thanks for help so far.
