Martha Howling baptised 25 Oct 1652 Great Shelford
« on: Thursday 18 November 21 02:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

Is the actual Great Shelford parish register available anywhere as the father's name is missing from the familysearch.org transcript, which is:

1652 Oct 25  Howling  Martha dau of           and Sarah

This suggests to me that the name is illegible rather than being an illegitimate birth.

Many online trees attribute this child to Thomas Howling and Sarah Knight but they don't marry until 1659.

Any help is always appreciated.

The 2 different transcripts of this entry on FindMyPast don't say 'and' Sarah - fathers name simply has a line through it which suggests to me it was indeed an illegitimate birth.

Thank you for that, but again, we only have transcripts, not the actual register.

But I think you are right and I am also now suspecting that Martha is indeed illegitimate and throws a big cloud over a potential connection that could go a long way back starting with what I thought were her grandparents.

I think I need to look at every Howling in Great Shelford leading up to 1652.

familysearch have the actual register - film 8069184.
Unfortunately it is locked, which means you can only view it at an LDS library.
The films of the BTs ARE viewable at home, but unfortunately they go up to 1651, and then there's a gap until 1660!
All on the 'catalog' tab on familysearch

A Thomas Howling married a Sarah Knight 23rd May 1659 at Great Shelford?
Perhaps there was some reason he couldn't marry before? Or he finally decided to make an honest woman of her?! You can view the actual entry, but it's a 'browse through this film' one, so I don't have time to do that now sorry. Unlikely to be any more information in the register, but you never know.
His dates given as 1623 to 1683. His baptism in 1623 is there, father another Thomas.

I reviewed the Great Shelford typed transcript overnight for the years 1557 to 1700, a bit of overkill but I wanted to get a feel for the whole clan. The significant items (as transcribed) are:

29 May 1622 Thomas Howling married Allinson Astin
01 Feb 1623  Thomas Howling baptized, son of Thomas
10 May 1648  Thomas Howling buried
09 Feb 1650   Allington Howling widow buried
25 Oct 1652   Martha Howling baptized, daughter of      and Sarah
25 Oct 1654   Sarah Howling wife of Thomas buried
29 Oct 1656   Mary Howling wife of Thomas buried
23 May 1659  Thomas Howling married Sarah Knight
07 Jun 1683   Thomas Howling buried

So it now seems to me that the Thomas Howling b1623 married the first Sarah and a Mary elsewhere and may have had other children baptized elsewhere as there are no others at Great Shelford.

Any ideas where that might be?  My thought is Little Shelford so will try there first.
