Looking for a death for Samuel McMail
« on: Thursday 18 November 21 23:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Samuel Hughes McMaill is born at Stranraer on March 22nd 1863 - the son of John McMaill and Margaret McMaill ms. Brown.
Margaret McMaill dies later that same year.
I can't find John and Samuel on the 1871 or 1881 Census.
Samuel marries on 1st August 1884
He marries using the name Samuel Cain McMail to Mary Dorman at Stranraer. His address on the marriage certificate is Lodge, Lochnaw Castle, Leswalt and he is a Mason Journeyman aged 22 (he's actually 21) . His parents names are as above. Only his mother is noted as deceased. The spelling of his surname has lost an L.
The marriage did not last long before the couple separated.
I believe I have found Samuel on the 1891 Census at Drummore in the parish of Kirkmaiden.
Samuel McMail  lodger   married   aged 28   mason  born in Stranraer
He is lodging in the household of a family called Johnstone.

I am looking for Samuel's death. I can't find him on the 1901 Census and I suspect he may have died young. I have reason to believe from a newspaper article he was sometimes known by the surname Cain. I have looked for his father John's death too and can't find him either.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading,
Looby :)

Thank you both for your prompt replies.

Ladyhawk - thank you - those two census entries do indeed look to be Samuel. I had wrongly assumed he would be with his father , but it looks like his dad must have been unable to rear him and fostered him out, and that is how he picked up the name Cain (which he used as a middle name when he married).

Gadget - thanks for the death but as you say wrong mother's name. Samuel might be recorded as single by the time he dies as his marriage was so brief it would be possible the informant of death wouldn't know about him being married.
I haven't looked at Ireland or England yet - it is, of course, possible he moved to either place. Thank you for the suggestion.

Thank you for the suggestion. But it seems this person has a different mother's name.

Thanks Gadget. I think that confirms that the death on 1947 is not for my Samuel.
