Date photo - Anthony or Robert Williams Holyhead Anglesey

This photo might be my 2nd Great Grandfather Anthony Williams (1853-1938). The inset in the top left hand corner is definitely his wife Emma nee Hughes (1862-1953), their daughter Elizabeth Williams (1890-1967) (my Great Grandmother) and her eldest daughter Mary (May) Parry (1915-1997) on her knee as a baby. A family member doubts this is Anthony (although that's what is written on the back of the original) and believes it might be his son Robert Williams (1893-1962). There is a striking resemblance with Robert, but it's not unusual for a son to resemble their father.

The inset can therefore be dated to 1915. Anthony would have been 63 in 1915 and Robert would have been 22, but I think the main photo could be a much earlier photo. I haven't seen a vintage photo with an inset like this before. Please date the main photo of the seated man? Is this Anthony or Robert?

I think you've answered your own question.
Obviously a young man & as you say pic.1 was taken after 1915
when Anthony would have been 63.
Pic.2 is around the same time.
In pic.1 he looks slightly older & appears to be married.

The inset (only part of the first photo) was taken in 1915, but I'm not sure about the date of the main photo. I have no knowledge of techniques used back in the day to produce this photograph. Presumably both photos existed and one was physically 'spliced' onto another. There are no other photographs of Anthony I'm aware of to confirm the resemblance. The main photo does show him wearing a wedding ring (he married Emma in 1879). Could the main photograph have been taken in 1880-1885 when Anthony could have been around 26 to 31? Or was it taken at a similar time to the inset when Anthony would have been much older.

The second photograph is (L-R) Elizabeth Williams (1890-1967); Robert Williams (1893-1962); and Margaret Williams (1888-1969) two sisters and their brother. Elizabeth is wearing a wedding ring (she was married in June 1914) so I agree this was taken between 1915 and 1918.

The man in pic.1 is wearing riding breeches from a post 1902 pattern uniform
which was in use up to the mid 30's.
As the cameo photo dated 1915 was inserted onto the main photo would make that photo
after 1915.

Thank you Jim1, that would seems to settle it! Pic.1 is Robert not Anthony as had been written on the reverse.

I am having doubts about them being the same man although they do a little alike, the man in the first photo appears to have a dimple in his chin and he looks about 10 years older, but I could be wrong.

Thanks Carol, I had noticed the cleft chin and thought it might have been Anthony, but jim1's point on the 'riding breeches' dates the photo to a time when it couldn't be him. If I had another photo of him I'd be much more confident.
