This is all really interesting.  I thought Edith had died a spinster, now it seems that  she married and had a child!

Robert W E Hall the son appears in 1939 war register with other Halls in Whitley bay. Maybe one of these is the "fat aunt" :) I also think he married in sq 1939 surname Holmes.

Thankyou all again.  I have now sent for the marriage certificate.  Not because I doubt any of your excellent research but I am interested to know if any other relatives were witnesses.  Assuming, as I expect, that the marriage is correct I am very happy to take everything else as fact.

As an aside, I ordered a marriage cert this month from GRO and it arrived in less than a week .

Looking at freebmd births for Hall/Holmes from 1939 onwards there are 4/5 possible births in the Northumberland area districts that could well be theirs one being a Robert.
