William Yates b1851 Liecester, died 1898 Melbourne (Aust)
« on: Monday 22 November 21 03:53 GMT (UK) »
I've just amazingly come on the photo below. I'm very sure it is William Yates, b Leicester 1851.
I want to date the photo if possible please. My guessing is that the photo was taken about 1890 (in Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia).  His hair and beard do not appear to be greying and he looks about 40 to me. Any comments much appreciated!

Thanks you experts out there!

Just moving this up the board. I think early 1890s would be about right, but wait for the experts.

I would agree with 1890s.

I do have one in my book that looks the same and is date 1892, but looking again I  notice that there is a trim on the edge of the jacket. it looks like it may have been restored too.

Notice the absence of a top pocket, common at the time
but not usual for the 90's.
The plain backdrop was also common in the 60'/70's &
became more elaborate later.

When I looked at it earlier, I thought 1880s!

Those braided jackets seem to extend over a decade or so.

Folks,
I appreciate all the comments! Thank you everyone.
OK. I have the original in my hand.  It does not appear to have been touched up/restored.  The border is about 3mm wider than shown, but it’s just the backing card. There is no more to see (front or back) of consequence other than a pencil note as to who it is.
William arrived in Melbourne in October 1875 (aged 24) with his wife. The photograph was taken in Fitzroy, Melbourne.
I’ve found William T.B. Latimer operated from 145 Smith Street, Fitzroy, between 1884 and 1888 then from 157 Smith Street, Fitzroy 1888 until 1908.
This would date the photo between those 1888 and when William died in 1898, so he  would have been 37-46 years of age.
That seems as close as we’ll get, I guess.
Thanks again all.
