Research about an English soldier dead in Frand WW2
« on: Monday 22 November 21 17:24 GMT (UK) »
I' m researching about an English soldier dead in France during the ww2.
His name DUNK Archibald Williams Georges.
Aged 40 when he died.
He's buried in a CWGC
His remains are in a small French town called La Bosse 20km far from Le Mans-200km far from Paris-West.
May be you've noticed I'm French, so I apologise for my poor English.
If you find my bottle in the see, Thank you

I suspect you already have much of the following information from www.cwgc.org

His parents were William Louis Dunk & Elizabeth Emily Terry & they married in 1895 in Sussex

Archibald married Louisa Sarah Dive born 1895 in 1931 but there doesn't appear to have been any children born to the marriage.  Louisa never remarried and died in 1980 in Sussex

Could you tell us exactly what type of information you are looking for so we don't duplicate what you may already have

Hi Gerard

His WW2 service record is still with the Ministry of Defence.  If I am reading it correctly he was the only casualty buried at La Bosse

Re photo.  There is a private tree on Ancestry which may have photos of him.  You could try contacting the tree owner if you have an Ancestry subscription. If not -  I will try to contact him & give him the link to this post

That's true. There's only one British grave in this small cemetary. But we have'nt  no information why he was there.
There are other British cemetary in Sarthe . They are often close to a place where they were hospitalised. No in La Bosse.
So it's why we wanted more about this soldier who rest far from his country. May be some next of kin might be interested to know where he rests.
If you are interested have a look at the website I mentionned above for the village called "Ruaudin". There a special mention on a English plane crash in 1946.

Thank you for this news.
An added picture will make our site more interesting for French people.
On my side,  I'll try to interview people of La Bosse. Some eldery may remind this event in their village, or I'll might get information at the town hall.

The Journal linked below has an article about the The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) 2nd Bn. time in France 1940 (see A Battalion at War, pages 40-42)

The survivors of the Battalion were evacuated at Dunkirk, end of May 1940.
Presumably Corporal Dunk was in a French/German hospital before he died and then buried in July 1940 some distance from the battle area.
