Where is Seymour SUTTON (bap 8 Jun 1845) hiding in 1901 and 1911?
« on: Tuesday 23 November 21 21:03 GMT (UK) »
John Sutton and Charlotte Knight lived in Earls Barton and married there 18 Jun 1843.

They start to have children and in 1851 they have Susannah 7, Seymour 5, and Pearcy 2.

In 1861 they are still in EB and now have Susannah 17, Seymour 15, Pearcy 12, George 9, Mary 6, William 3 and baby Sarah. (FindMyPast have Seymour transcribed as James).

In 1871 still in EB Mary 16, William 13, Sarah 10, Daniel 7 and Eliza(beth) Jane 2 are with them. Seymour is lodging in Wellingborough.

In 1881 they have moved to Knox Street in Wellingborough and Seymour now 35 along with William 24, Sarah 21, Daniel 17 and EJ 12 plus orphaned granddaughter Jane Birch, daughter of Pearcy, are with them.

In 1891 the family are still at Knox Road with Seymour now 45, William 33, Eliz 22 and Jane Birch 14 at home.

John probably dies in 1892 and Charlotte probably in 1896.

There is a death Wellingborough District for a Seymour Sutton in 1923 which looks like it could be him but I can't spot him in 1901 or 1911 - maybe another mistranscription.

Can anyone spot him please or an alternative death?

Many Thanks

In 1911, he is a 65 yr old widower in the Wellingborough Union workhouse. The first page lists the staff and Seymour is about half way down the next page.

He seems to have married in 1875 to either Mary Anne Jeffs or Elizabeth Woodhams. In 1881 he is back home and "unmarried" in 1891 he is home and "married" but with no wife.  Maybe she died soon after the wedding.
I can't find him in 1901, but maybe he is listed by his initials only in the Workhouse?

Seems to get complicated after that  :-\

In the 1881 household is a young widower with children called Samuel Cockings and he and Mary Ann Jeffs possibly marry in 1884 but that's to investigate further if necessary.

William Sutton I think takes on the surname Cockings.

Hi All.

It is Seymour who dies in 1923 as listed here.
Wellingborough Workhouse

Seymour Sutton died 28 Dec 1923  aged 80, from Wellingborough, buried at St Bendicits Church Cambridge on 13th, August 1924 by Cambridge University Authorities.

He is not on the 1901 census in the Workhouse as everyone has full names.

Thanks very much for all that - I will look further at what you've found.

Looks like there's "form" in this family with marriages breaking up - his brother Daniel appears to have married and then he seems to later be in Essex with another woman while his wife is living with another man and they appear to have a child who has this chap's surname as a given name and then uses it has his surname after Daniel dies and his wife remarries.

I'm descended from Seymour's brother George and have started to look at all of George's siblings.

Thanks again

The 1924 burial and mention of Cambridge Uni suggests his body was used for research - something I shall look into further.

Thanks very much for this - sounds like I have the makings of a good family history story with this family!

It gets worse.

Looking at the Northampton Mercury,  Seymour is in the paper on 25-01-1873 and 01-02-1873 for being drunk at Earls Barton, Then he appears for assaulting Mary Ann date 23-10-1880 and she is given a separation order from him.  The others are all related to the Workhouse starting 30-05-1902, 14-11-1902, 26-08-1904, 24-03-1905, 14-06-1912, 03-10-1913 refusing to work, absconding etc.
