Susanna Neame of Ash
« on: Wednesday 24 November 21 08:28 GMT (UK) »
I’m trying to find the correct Susanna Neame (of Ash) born c:1691 who married George Norton (of St Lawrence) on 11 Nov 1713, St Mildred Canterbury. George Norton was baptised 9 April 1682, Margate

Attached is a snippet of the marriage

I think it’s Susan(na) Neame, baptised 20 April 1691, Eastry, Kent. Parents Richard and Sarah.

There’s also a Susanna Neam, 4 Nov 1692 Woodnesborough, Kent .Parents Thomas and Jane.
Although this seems to be the marriage: Susanna Neam who married Thomas Wanstall, 18 Dec 1717, St Mary Woodnesborough.

Many thanks :)

It might be worth checking wills to see if their married daughter is mentioned.

There are two possible wills:

Will   Norton   George   St. Lawrence in Thanet   Made 1759  Probate: 1765   PRC/17/97/157a   PRC/16/433 N/2
Will   Norton   Susanna   St. Lawrence in Thanet   Made 1740   Probate :1741    PRC/17/91/27h   PRC/16/407 N/2      1741

Sussana who died 1741 was said to be married to a George of St Lawrence.

Thank you for the website

I will thinking of wills to check Susanna's parentage.

There's a will for Richard Neame of Eastry dated 1721 has been transcribed

http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~mrawson/genealogy/neam1721.html

It says his daughter, Susan, was married to Thomas Wanstale of Guston.

Thank you again. This means the Richard and Sarah Neame family of Eastry aren't the parents. And explains why it's Susan and not Sussana.

It shows the importance of evidence.

Hello, Wayne,

Just to add to the evidence is the marriage license of Thomas Wanstall.  It reads:

"Wanstall, Thomas, of Goodnestone n. Wingham, bachelor and Sus. Neame of Eastry, spinster.  At. Eastry, Woodnesboro' or Knowlton.  Dec. 11, 1717."

Just one thing you should be made aware of:  the Christian name "Sus." can be either Susan or Susanna (regardless of spelling).  Spelling of names, surnames and even common words was not settled until the late-mid 1700s and even then many rural areas didn't catch up until the early 1800s.

Susan was used interchangeably as Susanna and vice versa.  In parish registers if you see a ":" following either a Christian or surname, the colon symbol indicates that the word has been abbreviated.  This is quite often seen after the name 'Elizabeth' as "Eliza:".  It is so subtle that many people miss the colon symbol completely.  The only real information of a person's Christian name is the baptism for that person.  Even then, children's, and later wives and husbands', names were often modified to a diminutive or pet name, e.g. Flossie for Florence, Hannah for Ann, Molly for Margaret and so on.
