Genetic community but only 2%
« on: Wednesday 24 November 21 12:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My Ancestry DNA results recently updated my 2% Eastern European with a genetic community of 'Southeast Polish'.

As it was such a small percentage, I had ignored it as a probable error but now that it has added a specific community I wonder if this does point to an ancestor from this region, albeit pretty far back?

My great great grandfather was German from Baden-Wurttemberg so I wonder if it possibly comes in here. Does anyone have any idea or shall I disregard it for being such a low %.

Thanks,
Ella

Hi

I posted a similar question about my father's ancestry results, he also has Southern Poland, Slovakia and Hungary as genetic communities his family are mostly from Lancashire. He has a small percentage of Baltics in his main ethnicity results. Very intriguing....

From Ancestry

Quote
How do we determine your connection to communities?

A community is a group of people who share DNA because their relatives recently lived in the same place at the same time. Communities are usually much smaller than ethnicity regions and they go back only about 50-300 years.

I have a genetic community  of 'Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky' but don't have any know ancestors from there, although some of my ancestors' descendants settled there.  Ancestry tells me that they are probably connected to my Scottish ethnicity.

Add - Also, it states

Communities form when we identify AncestryDNA members whose ancestors probably came from the same place or cultural group.

When you examine your ethnicity, doe it list any other 'genetic communities'?

I have 7 such communities shown; all relating back to large ethnic groups.

Yes it does list other genetic communities - all in the UK where I'm from that make total sense. This one however makes no sense at all and I can't find any ancestors from it. Very intriguing indeed!
