Occupation
« on: Thursday 25 November 21 19:38 GMT (UK) »
I have Anthony Leaton born 1753 at Fellside
He was my 5th great grandad and my family members said he was working
on the estate of the Bowes family, at Gibside as possibly an estate and house steward.
I am trying to find out if this is correct.
I now find That his father John and Grandfather Anthony worked at the Bowes “Mines”
in the position of chief viewer.
So it could follow that Anthony Jnr may have had help getting his job with the same
estate through his father and or grandfather.
Any information you could help me with would be appreciated.
Regards Jenny Bailey

There are some Leaton wills on the North East Inheritance database.
Have you seen them? I don't know if they are your family. They should give the occupations of the testators, and you never know what other information.
They would seem to be all of 'Whickham', of which Fellside is a part, just a couple of miles from the house at Gibside.

Anthony 1728 (this is an adminstration).
Anthony 1797, probate 1803.
John 1761 probate 1765

I see Gibside is a National Trust property.
Have you tried contacting them for any old estate records?

Durham County Record Office seem to hold a lot of records for Gibside.
This is the page that came up on The National Archives Discovery webpage for a search 'Gibside AND estate".

 Added:
There's a wealth of information if you just put '"Anthony Leaton" gibside' into a Google search.
You need to put the speech marks around his name.
A lot at Durham Record Office.
Also spotted a William Leaton in these Durham RO records, which from the wills, looks like his brother.

Several of the hits quoted in old books, give Anthony as the 'agent' or 'chief steward' at Gibside.
Lots of interesting stuff.

Dear Maddy
Thank you for the reply
I didn’t have this information
William was Anthony Jnr’s Uncle who left him property and monies
Anthony seems to have taken over his position in the Gibside estate. As a house steward etc
Thank you regards Jenny

Dear Goldie
I did contact the Bowes museum and they referred me to their research section
A very nice lady sent me some general information, then today after she asked around her contacts she sent me articles from the Stathmore records all relating to the Leaton Men being employed
At Gibside.
Anthony Snr
Also his sons John and William. Stating their annual salaries and job description.
The latter on starting salaries @ £20 pa
Anthony Snr @ & &100 Pa
