IGI records query
« on: Thursday 01 September 05 22:09 BST (UK) »
I have a number of relatives who in the early 1800's were living in the Whittington, Newbold and Calow areas of Derbyshire.

I have found possible baptismal records for some of them on the LDS but the baptisms are listed as Chesterfield.  Now I appreciate that Chesterfield is extremely close by but I don't want to go down the wrong route.  Is it likely that their baptisms would be recorded as Chesterfield or should I take it that these are different people and look for more specific places?  I hasten to add I haven't found any in the Whittington etc areas who match for this time.

Anyone who knows the area or who has any ideas I would be extremely grateful for help.

Hi Jackie,

It is important to remember that the IGI is not a complete index and so there could be others in addition to those that you have found.

Also, are the baptisms that you found from extracted records (ie the batch numbers are Pxxxxxx or Cxxxxxx where the x is a number)?  If the batch number is an all figure number, then it is from a patron/member submitted record and should be treated with more caution.  These records may sometimes only be guestimates.  Whichever you have found, always try to verify the information by checking the original parish records.

And apologies if you already know this. ;)

Hi

The three areas you mention have their own IGI batch numbers therefore I would guess the Chesterfield names were different people.

Have you tried searching the IGI batches? There are several Hancocks (assuming that is the name you are after) in each area.

Thanks Nell and Keith for your very prompt replies,  being comparitevly new at this I hadn't appreciated about the batch numbers although assumed that the IGI wasnt complete hence my question.

I will try and narrow down my search a bit more. Is there anyway of discovering which batch numbers relate to particular areas?

Thanks again
Jackie

Hi Jackie
This wonderful site lets you search the IGI by parish batch numbers

Worth a try. Hope you find them.
Cheers Jan ;)

Hi Jackie. I don't know about the other places but I think Calow did not have a church until after the dates you mention so I should think it very likely that they used Chesterfield which would be the parish church - a chapel of ease was built at Calow around 1860 but was still part of Chesterfield.
I suggest you look at the following link too, it lists all the parish register stuff available at the Derbyshire records office and should be complete.
