Identification of Hospital Ship
« on: Monday 29 November 21 20:47 GMT (UK) »
The attached record relates to AB 4/2451 Augustus Donne, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.  He was serving aboard HMS Ossory when he died accidentally on 28 Mar 1916.  Can anyone decipher the name of the hospital ship?  Would also be interested to know where the Ossory was at this time?

Did your chap die aboard the Hospital Ship Soudan on 28 March? If so, TNA have extracted logs for the Soudan, including 1916. Unfortunately the logs aren't online. Perhaps the logs can confirm where the Soudan was in late March 1916.

"Ship's name Soudan. Official number 114052. Dates of voyages 18 September 1915 - 6 January 1916 and 7 January 1916 - 7 July 1916". https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C1733275

If it helps, here's a brief newspaper mention for the Soudan in early March 1916:

Church League for Women's Suffrage
01 March 1916
"The Rev. A. H. G. Creed, R.N., who is on H.M. Hospital Ship Soudan, writes that they have been plying between the Dardanelles and Malta, and were present at the evacuation of Suvla".

Thank you all very much.  It does look like Soudan but I though the Soudan was in the Mediterranean and I realise now that he's buried in the Orkneys.  Anyway, lots of leads now to investigate further.  Thank you.
