« on: Tuesday 30 November 21 22:57 GMT (UK) »
i have a john charles williams born in 1848 in Falmouth Cornwall son of Thomas Williams.
he married Amelia Greer in 1873 in Stoke Damerel.
i think he was in the Royal Navy orphanage school in 1861.
he was in the Royal Navy and i have his records. i know he was aboard the Royal Adelaide in the 1870s. he is mentioned about being in the North Devon Journal in 1880,
Is there any way of finding this record, without subscribing please.
thank you.Brian

Can't see anything at first pass. Do you know when in 1880? Where does the reference come from ?  Context?

i think he was in the Royal Navy orphanage school in 1861.
He was in the "Greenwich Hospital School" in 1861. 100 years earlier it was a school for orphans of seaman, but from the 1820s it had become a training school for mariners and navigators. By the time your lad was there, it was quite a prestigious naval school. It is possible his father was, or had been, in the Navy as well.
See here for history:

and this one perhaps more interesting from a social view point:

It's not an uncommon name.

There is a mention of a John Charles Williams in the North Devon Journal of 15 April 1880, second son of a very wealthy John Michael Williams. Not your man.
