The ellusive Ezra Hill
« on: Thursday 02 December 21 02:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, Im relatively new to geneology and family trees. I'm currently trying to trace my surname back as far as possible however I keep hitting a brick wall with Ezra Hill, all the information I can find is that he married a woman called Martha and they had a son called William in 1794.

I'm trying to trace the movements of my dad's family name, so fare they are very sedentry and up to Ezra they have all lived in Chapel-en-le Frith and the surrounding areas but i cant find anything on Ezra other than that I've already mentioned. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome to Rootschat.

Can we get a little more definite information?
Let's start with what you already know.

Where was William Hill baptised? What does his baptism entry in the register say?
Where and when did Ezra Hill marry Martha, and what was her surname? Does it give any other information in the marriage entry, like their ages, or places of residence?
Have you found any other children born to them apart from William.
Do you know the occupation of Willliam and Ezra?

All this information will hep to try and find the family hopefully.

I can see William’s baptism in 1794 in Peak Forest, also another child names Martha baptised 1792 in Peak Forest.
There is a marriage by banns in the “free Chapel”
20 Oct 1788 in Peak Forest for Habanezer HILL and Matha JACKSON
She signed her name; he left his mark
Witnesses were William And Thomas WINTERBOTHAM

I think the  Hill couple from Manchester are a different family. He dies 20 June 1798.
Who would think Habanezer was such a common name!

I think you are right and there appear to be so many versions of Habanezer  :-\

William Hill was baptised April 6th 1794 in Peak Forest, Derbyshire
Dont know about the marriage or Martha's surname.
Ezra's occupation is unknown
William's appears to be something like a "Line Runner" it's quite hard to read properly.
