Did Robert's wife Margaret Milligan (nee Parker?) have a son before their late 1881 marriage? I don't see her in the 1881 census (yet). So when she's located in 1881, it will be interesting to see if there are any young children with her (e.g. Sydney).

She's from Belper, Derbyshire, correct? Try searching for Sydney's birth as "Parker" (with MMN as Parker) prior to the 1881 marriage. If this is the case, maybe he was raised by someone else, but named Robert Milligan as his father when he married in 1927.

Looks like she's in Everton with her parents - as "Mary Ellen" Parker (age 18, born Belper).
Always a possibility she had a child before the marriage. Unless Robert had a son (Sydney) from a previous relationship?

Were Margaret's parents Walter and Harriet? If so, she's with them in Everton (1881 census). See my post above (reply #30).

Do you have the birth cert for John William Milligan, who disappeared while on the Conargo in late 1917? I'm very curious to know what his exact DoB is.

As regards the 1917 Police Gazette record with Sydney, some men were initially listed as deserters, but then were found to be casualties or even POWs. (I have a 19th century ancestor on a Desertion list, but he had simply switched regiments at the time, while serving outside the UK).

I can't help but think that John William is Sydney, as weird as that sounds.

Yes they were her parents, l only found 1871 census,, also John William was born Jan 1884,, l have found his baptism in Feb, l haven't got the birth cert, but found it on ancestry,
I also cannot help but think they were the same person although l never really belived it until l saw the conargo report,, but the awful conditions on that ship, he would have needed to hide for about six or 8 weeks,, l need to find just when he went on the journey to australia,, must be some crew list,, eda
