I was just about to mention Mary Bratton Jones of Coalbrookdale. She is my gx3 grandmother and I am stuck with her line. Somewhere I have notes and Robert the farmer rings a bell but I did get very muddled with them and haven't put anyone from that family on my tree yet except Mary. I don't know how she came to be in Manchester. If I get a chance today I'll see if I can find my notes - that sounds quite organised! - I mean I'll root through the piles of paper referred to in my happier moments as "research" and in my more despondent as "that pile of rubbish".

I've just remembered that I did find some Bratton Jones on the Lancs On Line Parish Clerk

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html

If you put Bratton in the forename box and Jones in the surname it turns up 5 references

Thanks - the other Bratton Jones you found relate to the side I am researching.   I wonder if Sarah Hattersley who married JB was a sister of Joseph Hattersly??

Another example of the family using both names

Joseph Matthew Jones registered death 1897 age 47.
Probate is under Joseph Matthew Bratton sometimes Jones died 20 June 1897 of 50 Churnet Street, Rochdale Road exec. Sarah Catherine widow.

The only baptism of the children I can see are:

Mary bap 4 August 1844 at St Mary and St Denys (Cathedral)parents Joseph and Susannah Bratton
John James bap 6 Dec 1846   same

1851
Joseph Gould 59 Fustion Cutter
Mary 57 wife
Sarah 27 dau single
Mary 21  dau single
John James Jones  age 4 grandson.?

Thanks Amondg - I have the census records - think John James Jones is the son Joseph and Susannah

Hello,

I don't know. Joseph Hattersley was my 3x great grandfather. I have his marriage to Mary Bratton Jones and their line forward but nothing more on them.

The point at which I am at is that Sarah could be Joseph's sister

That John Bratton Jones and Mary Bratton Jones could be brother and sister.

If that is so and the second John Bratton Jones marriage is the same person as the first one (which looks likely as the second one is of a widower) then Mary's father would be Robert Jones, farmer.

Although Hattersley is not a particularly common name it is quite big in Manchester!
