Thomas Hanks c,1805, Merton
« on: Tuesday 07 December 21 22:43 GMT (UK) »
From successive census returns it is clear that Thomas Hanks considers himself to have been born in Merton, though his stated ages suggest a birth anywhere between 1803 and 1807. Please can anyone identify his parents?

Doesn't help with parents, but I'm assuming this is his marriage - at Wendlebury on 6 April 1836? Thomas HANKS and Mary TAYLOR, both otp. Witnesses: John PINFOLD and Mary Ann NELSON.

I also note that whilst he says Merton for place of birth in 1851 and 1861, in 1871 it is "not known".  :-\

Thank you Maddy. You have the right Thomas and I hadn't noticed the entry in 1971. I should add that a physical examination of Merton, Islip and Wendlebury PRs at the Oxford Record Office showed up no christening record.

Thank you both.

The Thomas born in Garsington had no children on the 1851 census so cannot be our man, Thomas Hankes looks worth looking into. The suggestion that he may have had siblings in Merton is also very helpful.

I've been thinking about canon law. Am I right in believing that at about that time you could neither be married in church nor buried in consecrated ground? If so, the Thomas we're looking for must have been christened somewhere as he was married at Wendelbury Parish Church in 1836 and buried at Islip Parish Church in 1878
