Missing British Victory Medal ?
« on: Friday 10 December 21 08:25 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone offer an explanation as to why I can't find Victory Medal for L/Cpl 1542 Wilfred Cain who went over in 1915 and presumably Demobbed 1919 ?

Could this be your man?

From the Liverpool Echo, 13 November 1917

TWICE-WOUNDED D.C.M. WINNER
----------
Regimental-Sergeant –Major Wilfred S Cain, of the K.L.R., was awarded the D.C.M. last week for gallant conduct on the field in September last. This young hero has seen two and a half years’ service at the front. He went out to France with his regiment in May 1915, as a private, and was appointed regimental-sergeant-major in March last. He has been twice wounded. His distinction is a popular one, and he has received the hearty congratulations of officers and men of the regiment. He is an old boy of St Anthony’s School, and prior to the war was in the service of Messrs. J Dean and Son, glass manufacturers, Liverpool. His brother, Sergeant J S Cain of the Cheshire Regiment, was awarded the French Croix de Guerre a few months ago.

Could it be that Wilfred did not receive the Victory Medal because he had been demobilised in 1915?  "Dmb" on the Medal Card.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

The Medal Rolls shows 'Demobilised' for all soldiers on that page -- there is no date shown for the demobilisation, the dates shown on the Medal Rolls are the dates of entering a theatre of war. The soldier immediately after Wilfred Cain, i.e. John Campbell, has a surviving service record which shows that he was 'Disembodied, 9 / 5 / 1919', his papers show that he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

I could be way off base but the 14/15 Star was awarded according to rank
at entry which in his case was L/Cpl.
The BW & V medals were awarded based on rank at exit.
As he was the RSM would mean he was a WO1 so he may appear on the Officers Roll
although he wasn't commissioned.

The attestation for WT Cain 305146 has service numbers 1542 and 1561 struck out.

Looks like 305146 was actually Wilfred Francis Cain but the army had him down as Wilfred Thomas Cain.

Mother Mary, 3 Taylor Street.

Thanks everyone for your Time and Input on this.
To give everyone the full background on this research.
The Grandson wanted more information on his Granddad Wilfred Francis Cain who he maintained served
in the King's Liverpool Regt and was shot in the leg  wound was shown to him as a kid.
He wanted more information on his Granddad other than he had a Brother John and a Vincent
He married in 1927 Anne Tracey
He eventually provided a Date of Birth as 7 Sep 1895 which I assume was from the 1939 Register which are always wrong in my experience.
He then said his Granddad was in 1/8th King's Liverpool Irish and was a CSM and appears to have found
Attestation papers for a Wilfred Thomas Cain 1542 / 1561 and 305146 as ShaunJ found.
Those records show that person lied about their age and their Mother Mary wrote to Army to get him Back.
I am not convinced that Record is him.
I found his Brother's Birth = John Stanilaus Cain - June Quarter 1893 West Derby Vol 8b page 333
Mother's Maiden Name = Baron
Vincent Joseph Cain - June Quarter 1900 West Derby Vol 8b page 421 Mother's Maiden Name = Baron

No Wilfred Francis Cain Births 1893 to 1898 on GRO

But did find a Catholic Baptism showing his Birth was 6 September 1897  under Wilfred Francis Cain
Mother Mary Ellen Barron
Then found his Freebmd Birth Index for him under Wilfred Francis Kane not Cain
December Quarter 1897 West Derby Vol 8b page 305
Doesn't come up on GRO site to get Mother's Maiden Name.

Found Marriage Index for James Patrick Cain marrying on 16 March 1893 Mary Ellen Baron
James's Catholic Marriage Record however under Kane not Cain per GRO

James died as Patrick Cain June 1902 per Coroner's Request buried in Ford Cemetery trying to get Inquest Report from Newspaper

Anyway found 1911 Census for the Family copyright image removed
