I am not convinced that Record is him.
I've read it & can't see anything suggesting it's not apart from
his age which wasn't unusual.
Later in his record he states his middle name as Francis.
All of the anecdotal evidence says it's him.

Agreed Jim1
BUT
Some things agree some don't.
He was born as I have found 06 September 1897
so that Attestation pre War on 29 April 1912 he stated he was 17 years 7 months
But he was only 14 years 6 months
He gives address as 6 Lithotown Street Everton at 1912 but 1911 Census shows address as 43 Tailiesin St off Scotland Rd Liverpool
He declares himself as a Glass Worker at James Dean Glassworks, Hook Street Liverpool which his Mum Mary Cain of 3 Taylor Street confirms when she writes to the ARMY to complain about his false declaration.
But the Family are proud of the Fact that he was an SEO in the Inland Revenue Tax Office who turned down repeated Commissions to remain this RSM
At Attestation allowing for his False Age and address and Occupation
He declares his Next of Kin as just Mary Cain of 3 Taylor Street
Surely being Single and so Literate he would in the event of his Demise
Want any Soldiers Effects and Dependents Pension to go to his Mother as Next of Kin
and he knew her Full Name was Mary Ellen Cain of 43 Taliesin Street
The letter in the Attestation papers from Mary Cain of 3 Taylor Street in March 1916
she states he is really now only 18 years and  6 months
Her letter to the Army in April 1916 states she has 3 Sons in the Army ? and being a Widow
Sons being ?
possibly
John Stanislaus Cain born June Quarter 1893 West Derby page 333
Wilfrid Francis Kane born December Quarter 1897 West Derby page 305
Vincent Joseph Cain born June Quarter 1900 West Derby page 421

So she trying to get Wilfrid Francis either Home or out of the Army because of his Age

Yet happily Admits therefore that Son Vincent is in the Army and in April 1916 he is only 15 then
and must have joined up when he was 14 ?
What's that about?

Ontop of that the Army have when reconstructing the burnt papers
they have inserted 2 pieces or possibly 3 for 305147 Wiliam Hogan 1581 of 1/8 th

Finally why did Wilfrid pre Conscription opt to join the Liverpool Irish ?
He and Siblings weren't Irish all born in Liverpool
His Parents weren't Irish both Liverpool born
His Grandparents weren't Irish.

Am I being too sceptical with what I've said above that's rather odd.
Am I looking for something not there.

Would welcome everybody's own Opinion on above.

He joined as a Territorial so quite possibly went to the nearest depot
to where he lived as he would have to undergo fortnightly training.
There were plenty of underage lads who joined both during &
before the war.
Early war lads who were found to be underage were usually sent back
but as the war progressed they turned a blind eye & a deaf ear to the issue.

The Army may also have been persuaded by his reluctance to leave.
He was progressing through the ranks which meant more pay &
he accepted the £25 bounty that was offered to Territorials who
would have otherwise been "time served" by 1916.
After conscription the law was modified to include TF who by
mid 1916 could have & were kept on for the duration but he
had completed his term before this & could have gone home.
