Mary Roberts of Holywell b.1795-1798
« on: Saturday 11 December 21 01:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm a bit stuck with this one. I have a woman named Mary Roberts who married a Joseph Williamson in St Elphins Warrington on 30 Nov 1820.
1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses give her place of birth as Holywell Wales.
She dies in 1866 (burial record gives dob as 1792) and is buried in St Elphins Warrington Jul 1866.

Problem is, I have no idea where to track her back in Wales. It seems Roberts is an insanely common name in this place and time, with dozens of Mary Roberts to research.

I'm more inclined to believe her dob is closer to 1798 as this is what it was given in the earliest census (1841). Later censuses give is as 1795, 1796 and her burial record as 1792.

Does anyone know anything about the Roberts family or families in the area? or possible baptisms for her?

Thanks a million,
Ali  :)

1841 she is 43 bn Wales, the age has not been rounded down
1851 she is 55 bn Wales
1861 she is 65 bn Holywell, Wales
Only the 1861 says Holywell, the other two just have Wales.  Her year of birth hardly differs with census ages as 43, 55 & 65.

Burial 24 Jul 1866 age 74, also 74 on death registration. Age at death depends on the knowledge of the informant and this clearly does not tie in with the other ages.

Baptisms at Holywell for 'Mary Roberts'
9 June 1793 - parents Daniel & Elizabeth
4 May 1795 - Mother Elenr
9 October 1795 - Parents John & Sarah
1 Mar 1800 - Parents Edward & Mary

First child born to Mary and Joseph was named Sarah. Perhaps named after maternal grandmother?

Thank you all for the input! Good idea about Sarah maybe being named for her grandmother. I'll look into it!  ;D
