Rocktown O'neil
« on: Wednesday 15 December 21 00:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello. First time visitor on this site. I've read the threads about other Rocktown O'neills and we're not quite a match, but pretty close.
I'm looking for info on Michael O'NEIL(O'neill) married to Margaret McCOURT. I have no confirmed documentation on either. In Griffith's evaluation, there is a Michael O'Neill, farmer, 1859, which is a pretty good match but I can't confirm it.

They are the parents of my gggf George O'NEILL (O'NEIL), farmer, born 1851 Rocktown, parish Maghera, Londonderry and died 1922 Belleville, Ontario. He married Rose Scullion of Cavan, her father being Patrick Scullion, in Ballyscullion. She was baptized 1851 in Ballyscullion and died in Belleville, Ontario in 1937.  George and Rose emmigrated to Canada in 1879.

There's a story my mom remembers that her grand father was one of 10 siblings that left Ireland during the famine. All went to Australia except one. I've debunked this story as her grandfather was born and died in Ontario. But George O'NEIL could be part of this story - the one that went to Canada during the famine (1879).

In the Ontario census, there's a John O'NEIL that shows up in the same household. I don't know what relation he is to George and Rose. And I wouldn't be surprised to find out if Michael and Margaret immigrated to Canada also, although I haven't found them in any shiplist.

So my ultimate goal is to find out if this story is true, to find George O'Neil birth town and registration, and any info on Michael and Margaret and their children.

Most of the dates you are looking for might be pre civil registration in which case you'll need to see if church records survive. Many R.C. Parish registers here- https://registers.nli.ie/

Just in case any one is confused, the location 'Cavan' mentioned is not the town or county of Cavan but part of the townland of Tamlaghtduff known as Cavan. https://www.townlands.ie/londonderry/loughinsholin/ballyscullion/bellaghy/tamlaghtduff/
There's an thread here which mentions Cavan-

This baptismal entry in Lavey R.C. Church might be worth investigating although no guarantee this family related (or at least closely related)-

O'NEILL GEORGE   18/ 9/1870   ROCKTOWN
The birth registration shows parents were John O'Neill & Nancy McGonagil-

You can follow household in the Valuation Revision Books on PRONI's website which run from the printed version of Griffith's Valuation (mid-1800s) until c1930 to see how long they might have stayed in one house-

Not the same George. I have marriage cert that shows George O'NEIL and Rose SCULLION married in 1878. I have passenger list showing they emmigrated in 1879. They are in Ontario Census 1881. I have used Belleville, Ontario telephone directories to trace George and Rose during their Canadian life. The death cert for George says parents are Michael O'NEIL and Margaret McCourt.

Thank you for this tip. I was able to trace Michael O'NEIL and Patrick SCULLION.

I wasn't suggesting that the George born 1870 was the one who married in 1878 but it would be worth tracing the family of the 1870 George to see if there might be a connection.
