East Grinstead - hamlet of Woodbury?
« on: Wednesday 15 December 21 17:44 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone know if there was a hamlet known as Woodbury close to East Grinstead at one time - possibly in the area where there is now a Woodbury Avenue/Woodbury House Hotel.

I have 'Woodbury' named as a birth place on a soldier's record (late 18thC) but believe he may have hailed from E. Grinstead.

Thanks. :)

Nicola

Woodbury might have been a house or farm name if it was part of an address, or did it specifically say “hamlet of Woodbury”?

This map is a bit late but I can’t see any thing obvious here:

(I only had a quick glance though).  :)

Added: there seems to be a Woodbury or two in other counties …

Welcome to RootsChat.

I have 'Woodbury' named as a birth place on a soldier's record (late 18thC) but believe he may have hailed from E. Grinstead.

Can you confirm the period you're looking for is the late C18th (ie 1790s) or is it the late C19th (ie 1890s)?

If it's the latter, is it the Mathews family you're interested in? If so, various census and newspaper references name their residence as Woodbury, Lewes Road, East Grinstead. So it looks like Woodbury was the name of the property, likely the same one that became the Woodbury Hotel, now named Woodbury House (converted to apartments?).
