Family of Donald McLeod and Martha Hossack (married 1845) Cromarty
« on: Friday 17 December 21 19:56 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching for James McLeod b. 29 Nov 1847, Kenneth b. 5 Mar 1850, and Donald b. 4 Nov 1851 plus the dad Donald McLeod, a sailor, born 1825 or 1826.  Mother Martha Hossack died 2 March 1857.  The family were living with the grandmother Catherine Hossack (nee Hogg).  The grandmother died 21 Feb 1857.  There is one baptized Donald McLeod born in Cromarty in 1823 and he was a baker and died in Rosskeen.

Is it likely the entire family was whiped out in 1857 or can anyone find this family?  I did happen to have downloaded the Ancestry 1851 census which shows Donald 25, James 3, Kenneth 1, and confuses Martha.  However, this did not resolve birth location of Donald snr.  I think it unlikely he is from Stornoway.

This is also shown on FamilySearch.org:
1851 SHORE CROMARTY, ROSS AND CROMARTY Martha is shown with her husband Donald McLeod shown as (Son-in-Law), a Seaman aged 25 years old born 1826 along with three of their children 1) James 3 born 1847, 2) Kenneth 1 born 1850, 3) Donald 0 years born 1851. They are living with Martha's mother Catherine Hossack, shown as a WIDOW aged 62 years old born 1789 Cromarty.

DEATH 2 MARCH 1857 shown as Martha McLeod, as aged 40 years old when she died (birth 1817) her parents are shown as James Hossack a Fisherman and Catherine Hogg. Informant cousin Robert Hogg.

" I did happen to have downloaded the Ancestry 1851"

Are you looking at an image of the Census 1851?. Images are available from Scotlandspeople.

Is this your family?

Census Scotland 1851     Shore, Ross and Cromarty       (Ancestry)

Thank you.

Yes, your version of the census is a bit clearer than mine.  Martha 5mths.  Turned out to be Martha Hossack daughter of Catherine Hossack (nee Hogg).  Donald born in 1851 was not recorded in the census.  Your clue about James McLeod will be helpful.  Thanks.

Andrew McLeod married Ann Hossack in 4 Feb 1820 in Nigg, and I have that tree.  Those Hossacks came from Resolis and before that Nairn.  I also have some Hogg family from Cromarty.  William Hogg b1815 married Catherine McLeod in 1854 in Cromarty.  I thought I might find a connection.  I did not download Martha McLeod (nee Hossack's) death cert. as someone else had.  I'll write them.

"I think it unlikely he is from Stornoway."

What cause do you have for considering Stornoway as birthplace?

Having considered Stornoway, why do you think it is unlikely

Census 1851........" along with three of their children"

Does that mean that you have other children born to this couple, additional to James, Kenneth and Donald?
