Birth Certificates
« on: Saturday 18 December 21 18:19 GMT (UK) »
Hello there any help appreciated

Am helping to find a father  but this lady has two birth certificates  both registered Pontypridd
Glamorgan,
The first one December 1946 her actual birth date she was born.
The second certificate was registered  November  1948 which is incorrect.
She was given the last one  1948 by the registry office but refused the first one.
Any idea how i can hold of the first one would the GRO help.
Have done a lot of family research but never come across this before any advice would be helpful. Her mother was not married until 1948 so i guess she re registered her with the new husband name  which states this was her father  this is purely a guess on my part.
Many thanks

I’ve been meaning to order one where there is a later registration too (after marriage) so would be interested to hear replies on this. Was undecided if i needed to order both. If listed in the index I don’t see why it wouldn’t be issued.

Th first registration should be identical to the second except the father’s name will be blank, unless he was present at the time of the first registration, If the parents of an illegitimate child marry after the birth has been registered, they are meant to then reregister the birth to legitimise the child.

Have you tried ringing the GRO?

Was her biological father the man her mother later married?  It may be that his name wasn't on the earlier cert.

Hi
Many thanks for your help
She does now know if it is her father or not but her mother did marry the man who was listed as the father on the second  birth certificate.  I had no idea you had to reregister the birth if she married.
I will contact the GRO  and again Diolch yn Fawr

I am pretty sure that there’s no formal requirement to re-register a birth in these circumstances, but it’s something that many folk chose to do, for fairly obvious reasons.

I do not know when it was first necessary but nowadays you do have to re register a birth when the parents marry after the birth was first registered.

Sorry I don't agree. Here's the GRO  site which says its an option, not mandatory.

Here is the link that says they do have to so which do we believe  :-\

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-to-re-register-a-childs-birth-following-marriage-of-natural-parents

Details
If the parents have married or formed a civil partnership after the child was born, they are required to re-register the birth to have the natural father’s details added to the birth record.
