Joseph Stanley Ball (b 1789 Middlesex – d 1869 Bath) Will?
« on: Sunday 19 December 21 14:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone.

I was wondering if anyone else might have a better chance of finding a will for my relative Joseph Stanley Ball (b 1789 Middlesex – d 1869 Bath). Joseph is buried at St. James' Cemetery, Lyncombe and Widcombe, Bath. I believe Joseph's granddaughter Jane Elizabeth Ball (b 1869 - d 1870) is also buried near him in the same churchyard.

I have no idea if Joseph wrote a will but I do have the will of his father Joseph Ball (b 1752 - d 1823), sister Sally Newsom Ball (b 1779 - d 1864) and her husband, Edward Butt so it’s not impossible he produced one.

I had a look on the government will website to no avail but the website was being glitchy this morning. I also have ancestry and could not find one there. I do not have Find My Past anymore.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bonus task should anyone wish to take it on:

I am also trying to find the death record/any other records, after christening, for Joseph’s daughter Elizabeth Jane Ball (b 1815) baptised/christened 1816 in St Luke, Finsbury, Islington, England. I believe Elizabeth was not included in the will of her aunt, Sally Newsom Butt who died in 1864. Her sister Mary Ann Hillyer, nee Ball, was included in the will.
Hillyer - Combe Down, Bath, England.
Gibson - Foston on the Wolds, Yorkshire, England.
Ball - Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire, England.

The 1869 death in Bath just shows him as Joseph

Looking back on all the various records he was only ever plain Joseph, not with a second name of Stanley.

Ancestry & FindMyPast only take you back to the government will website, that is the only place that a will for that period is likely to be found.

In the 1861 census he is listed as Joseph S Ball. His son was Stanley Arthur Ball. Stanley Arthur Ball's daughter, Jane, is also buried at St James's, Bath.

Joseph Stanley Ball was also the only 'Joseph Ball' who was born around that time and who died around that time (post 1861 census) but I take your point and agree that the baptism and majority of records only list him as 'Joseph Ball.'

Thank you, I didn't find the gov website much use as it seems to require me to know the probate date (which I don't know) and the search was awful as it only allowed you to search by surname. That being said I used ancestry searching 'Joseph ball' etc and nothing came up.

It is always worth while trawling a few years after the date of death on the government web site at least you are not dependant on dodgy transcriptions  :)

Where does it ask you for for the date of probate?

The only requirement is the year of death
