James GOULD born 1802-1805, North Cadbury
« on: Monday 20 December 21 12:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'd appreciate some help in confirming who the parents were of James GOULD, who was, according to 1851 and 1861 census records, born in North Cadbury (note: 1851 is wrongly transcribed as West Bradley as can clearly be seen on original record). On the 1851 there looks to be someone transcribed as James (mother) female age 80 birth year 1771 born North Cadbury.

Looking for possible parents of James I can see three possibles:-
- 17 April 1803 North Barrow (Robert and Elizabeth)
- 29 Dec 1805  South Barrow (James and Amy)
- 14 Nov 1802  North Cadbury (Joseph and Ann)
These parishes are fairly close together.

If the 1851 census is showing James' father JAMES GOULD and not mother, this might suggest James and Amy are the parents and his baptism was in South Barrow in 29 Dec 1805.  However the baptism by Joseph and Ann in North Cadbury on 14 Nov 1802 is a better fit (but doesn't explain the entry on the 1851 census?)

James married Leah Hole in 1829 in West Bradley, and the children were all born/lived in West Bradley. James Gould died in West Bradley in 1870 aged 68, giving birth record as 1802.

Thanks for reading this - any ideas how I can proceed?

1851 census reference   H0107/1935 f39 p6

ADDED
In 1841 There is a Joseph Gould living with James & Leah - age 65
H0107/943 bk2 f3 page 1

I suspect this could be the wrongly labelled James in 1851

Thanks Rosie. I agree that the entry on 1851 census is probably wrong and that it should be Joseph Gould, father, born 1771. (checking my old notes, I had thought that James' father might be Joseph but its good to revisit it)

I've found a baptism of a Joseph Tho Gould baptised in South Barrow 6 Aug 1775 (by a Joseph and Ann Gould) which seems to fit. Looking for a marriage for Joseph b. 6 Aug 1775 I can see a marriage on 15 Oct 1799 to a Jane Galpon which also fits with the baptism.  A baptism for Jane Galpen in Compton Pauncefoot on 23 Nov 1769 by parents Calib and Eliz Galpen seems right, as does a marriage of Caleb Galpen and Betty Hunt on 29 Jan 1769 in Henstridge.

Its identifying the parents of Betty Hunt that I'm struggling with. There are possibly 3 contenders:
- Betty Hunt, bap 6 Oct 1744, Henstridge (James and Sarah Hunt)
- Elizabeth hunt, bap 25 Jul 1740, Pauncefoot (Dodington and Susannah Hunt)
- Betty Hunt, bap 15 Nov 1746 Henstridge (Thomas and Hannah Hunt)

A tree on Ancestry suggests parents are Dodington and Susannah (who was Rector at Compton Pauncefoot). I've followed it up and this family seem quite wealthy. Somehow this doesn't fit with the family of James Gould in the census. What does anyone else think?

This is very interesting Trish.  You're saying that the entry on 1851 census of 'James' mother b.1771 North Cadbury, isn't James or Joseph, it's actually Jane, James' mother and wife of Joseph.

The records show Jane Gould died Mar 1858 and Joseph Gould died 2 June 1850, therefore it could only be Jane on the census in 1851. Thank you for highlighting this.

But the really interested fact you've revealed is that Susannah and James Gould (born 3 Oct 1800 and 11 Nov 1802 respectively, North Cadbury) are baptised with father Joseph Gould and mother Ann.  Whereas baptisms of Caleb (27 Sept 1807), Elizabeth (21 Jan 1810) and John (7 Mar 1813) in North Cadbury are to parents Joseph Gould and Jane.

There is a marriage record for Joseph Gould to Jane Galpon - 15 Oct 1799 in North Cadbury, but I cannot see any earlier marriages to an "Ann" - to account for Susannah and James' baptisms.

The marriage of a Joseph Gould to an Ann Bracy (Beary) in nearby South Barrow in 15 April 1769 is likely to be the parents of Joseph Gould born 6 Aug 1775.  The marriage to Jane Galpon fits the five baptisms but I'm baffled why it is Ann's name on the baptism of Susannah and James.  If Jane is not James' mother then I would have expected her to be listed as step-mother on the 1851 census.

It is possible that the actual entry is hard to read or Jane was also known as Ann?
