Look up request - Yalding
« on: Tuesday 21 December 21 14:22 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for details of Widow Margaret Elphicke or Elficke being buried at Yalding 1561 (Ss Peter and Paul).  Would also be interested to know if the burial record notes whose widow she is as I have not located any marriage record.  Many thanks.

The filmed record doesn't show a husband's name.

As parish registers only began in 1538 - her marriage may have been before that date.

Thanks.  She was born Margaret Buckherst.  Does it show the date of the burial?

Date of burial 10 April 1561 at Ss Peter & Paul. Her surname has been transcribed as Elphick - but the filmed record is hard to decipher and it looks more like Elpgirk!

There is a strange word after her surname which looks like 'nowop'.

This record is amongst Kent burials on Find My Past - so if anyone has access and sees this message - maybe they could kindly look and see what they make of that last word please.
Places of interest;

I don't know what is written after her name.  There must be another register other than the one on FindMyPast unless that word is supposed to be Widow.

It was a fluke that I found that for William, it was on the list of my search results next to Margaret  ;D

Oh yes Rosie! You can actually view that Will on Ancestry.

Just go to Search in the Ribbon menu across the top of screen - click 'Wills & Probate' - then type Marg* Elp* - and insert date 1579.

You can see a filmed record of that Will!
