Looking for marriage of George maggs and Elisabeth
« on: Tuesday 21 December 21 20:07 GMT (UK) »
I’m looking for a marriage between George maggs born around 1795 in midsomer Norton and Elisabeth also born around 1795 surname unknown. On the 1841 and 1851 census she listed her birthplace as chew magna. The only marriage I could find of a George and Elisabeth was in bedminster to Elizabeth Pickering but that surname is not in the chew magna parish records. Any help would be appreciated.

There is this marriage:

George Maggs and Elizabeth Tripp on 15th May 1826 in Chew Magna, Somerset.

Did they have any children? If so, when and where?

1851 shows George b Compton Martin

Only child with them in 1851 was William b 1836.  Elisabeth is 58 so it’s possible there were no children born after 1837

I saw this marriage too but the 41 and 51 census have them living in west harptree. They have 4 children baptised there in west harptree from 1815 through to 1820 the last one Sarah is my ancestor so the 1826 marriage is to late

In 1841 George is a tailor aged 35 & Elizabeth is 35.  2 children Joseph 7 & William 4

In 1851 George is a tailor aged 55 & Elisabeth is 58.

Both censuses are West Harptree but big difference in ages

There are two George and Elizabeths in West Harptree in 1851. The tailor above, and another older couple (George a labourer) living with a married daughter who would was born there c1817. Neither George says he was born in Midsomer Norton

Are you sure you have the right one?

Looking at the West Harptree baptisms 1815-1827, they're the children of George the labourer. Sarah was not the last. There's also Mary in 1823 and Maria in 1827

George the tailor is baptising children in Chew Magna from 1828 onwards, which might fit the marriage 1826 marriage to Elizabeth Tripp

In the 1851 census he states he was born in Clapton Somerset, Clapton is a hamlet in the parish of midsomer Norton which is where his baptism was registered
