Sergeant John Watson, Cape Mounted Rifles c. 1886
« on: Sunday 26 December 21 10:42 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody help me to find out more about Sergeant Watson, please, such as where he originally came from, and when? He married Bridget Daly in the Roman Catholic church in King William's Town in October 1886, and they had a daughter named Annette who married Louis James Walsh, but so far this is all I know. I think I have managed to trace back Bridget's side, and also her death in Durban in 1961, but John has proved to be a stickier problem as Watson is a very common surname in South African records.

Thank you, Sandra and Shaun J.! Well, that was SO not what I was expecting! Interestingly though, my cousin had mentioned that his late father was of Irish/French extraction, so that seems to back up the statement that John was believed to have been "a native of Paris."

Thank you so much for finding that image, Pampoen. I spent the rest of yesterday afternoon hunting for more mentions of "Jack Walton" on Trove. He seems to have arrived in Australia at either the tail end of 1894 or early '95, and appears on the stage for the first time (in a variety show put on by Messrs Cogill Brothers in Melbourne), on 2 Feb '95. He joined Maggie Moore's lot in early April and toured Sydney, then the provinces, until around the end of August of that year. His act seemed to consist mostly of playing tunes on the banjo, and he appeared to be pretty well received, judging by the reviews, so it's quite sad that things ended the way they did.
