DNA
« on: Sunday 26 December 21 16:42 GMT (UK) »
I  was  gifted  a  DNA  didn't  want  to  do  it  but  got persuaded to, anyway the  results returned as   I'm showing East European,  from  1800 none of the census show  EE, high percentage of 94% English,  apart  from  my  gt grandfather  being  born  in Sweden I am a  bit bewildered  about East European.

Is this the same test, LM?

Which company did you test with?  Ethnicity results are only a guide as they depend on the particular site's database.

Ah. My Heritage is notorious for odd ethnicity results.

This is what I have  for Ancestry compared with My Heritage using the same sample results:

My Heritage:

English
50.1%
Irish, Scottish, and Welsh
27.5%
Scandinavian
22.4%

Ancestry:

Wales
88%
Scotland
9%
Ireland
3%

The Ancestry result is far closer to my tree info.  Although the Scottish figure is a little low.

I uploaded my DNA to Heritage from Ancestry…rubbish. In Ancestry I am 96% Scottish, 2% Irish and 2 %Welsh which stocks up with my tree and ancestors
My Heritage have me with a big fat 0% Scottish and stopped replying to me when I queried it
Forrest - Blantyre
McLellan - Dumfriesshire
McCracken - Dumfriesshire
Harkness - Dumfriesshire
Adamson - Dumfriesshire

Think I am  going to have to give  up thinking about it and  go with what  I know from  my researching.

Even the head of MyHeritage has admitted their current ethnicity estimates are pretty rubbish! The communities they introduced this year are more accurate, but somewhat odd if you have accurate communities but completely wrong countries/regions.

Don’t take too much notice of the percentages LM.

We often see people (on a likely wild goose chase) searching for the ancestor who passed down the tiny X% of unexpected DNA.

What do you know about your Swedish great grandfather’s parentage. It’s not far from Eastern Europe to Sweden.  :)

My Heritage percentages are fairly accurate for me.  :)

I've just checked my 23andMe results - last updated in June. I'm not sure how they have calculated my 'Ancestry Composition' as I was more interested in the other features. However, it seems that they use the residence of my matches as part of the calculation.

They assess me as 99.6% British and Irish and list 18 main regions. I have most matches living in Greater London and Dublin. They then give 10/165 regions for UK and 10/26 Irish regions.

They also include this caveat:

. Because these results reflect the ancestries of individuals currently in our reference database, expect to see your results change over time as that database grows
