Greengrocer Wages 1920
« on: Tuesday 28 December 21 10:08 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with a salary for 1920/21 for a male greengrocers assistant. It seems avg salary was £5 but i'd guess he would be on less than this. Reason i'd like to know is he was fined £35 and i'd like to know how many weeks salary this was likely to be.

Welcome to rootschat

How old was he.

A newspaper article in 1920 was suggesting £3 a week for a greengrocers assistant and he was previously a captain in the army.

Thank you for that, he was 25 just left army as a private. I guess it's going to be a little less.

He was sued for not marrying someone. They had the banns & then according to a newspaper article, he wrote 5 days before the wedding telling her to cancel everything. When the judge asked him why, he said she was dull.
Looks like a very expensive dumping....

It was obviously going to be an expensive wedding, maybe the father was hoping to get rid of his dull daughter  :).  I wonder if he ever paid it back in full

i'm trying to find that out. Currently trying to see if i can find the court papers to find out more. Everytime i think of this i can't help but laugh.
She was a domestic servant & he had just left army, can't imagine it would have been a large wedding.

It was certainly a lot of money, maybe a newspaper misprint  :-\. Hope you manage to find more information on it.
