Hi Rebecca,

I've discovered this quite some time after you originally posted, but I can help you with descendants of Christian Devers (1820-1898) who migrated to Australia.

He was indeed a butcher from Salzgitter, wh we understand came to Australia chasing the gold rush.  His wife Wilhemina (1830-1919) remained in Germany with their surviving children Christian (1851-1924) and Alvena (1858-1924).

Christian Sr had little success striking it rich finding gold, but spent time at the diggings in Beechworth Victoria before moving to nearby Rutherglen district in 1859.  The Devers family and name would be an integral part of that community for the next century and a half.

Realising there was a living to be made in feeding hungry mners, he returned to his trade of butchering which his sons and even grandchildren continued well into the 1970's.

We understood Wilhemina, Christian Jr and Alvena joined Christian Sr in Rutherglen in 1863 after a separation of five years.  Your note that Christian Jr travelled to Australia in 1870 is of interest.

Eventually Christian and Wilhemina had seven recorded children in Australia including Christian and Alvena who emigrated, wih a couple more stillborn or ded shortly after birth.

Christian (1851-1924) m.1877 Annie Wiesel (b/d, unc)
Alvena (1858-1924) m.1893 James Campbell (b. ? - 1905)
William (1865-1935) m.1896 Beatrice Marshall (1872-1941)
Henry (1869-1952) nm
Annie (1872-1962) nm
Otto (1875-1926) m.1904 Ellen Colmo (1876-1960)
Emma (1875-1879)

There are of course many descendants now.  DM me if you want to track this further.

This request has nothing to do with the Devers and German butchers, but to do with the locality.
I am very keen to know if any-one from around Salzgitter-Bad (Kneistedt) can help me locate a copy of a self published book by Wilhelm Schrader titled "Chronicle of ther former village of Kneistedt", 1980 Salzgitter-Bad.?
