Where could he be? Mackay
« on: Thursday 30 December 21 16:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I'm driving myself nuts looking for Alexander Mackay. The only info I have is his listing on his son's death cert. His son is also Alexander.

It states he is deceased on his son's death cert in 1889 . His wife is still alive and her name is Mary née Gibson. I can't find a death or marriage for him anywhere. Also no luck with passenger lists etc. Any idea where else I could look? The family were all edinburgh portobello areas.

Thank you!

Sorry, what's the first part of your reply? Is that a death?

The marriage is correct. Thank you.

The census is his son, so still the right family but not the man himself.

The first part is the death you posted.

ALEXANDER MACKAY   Married    JANET GLENDINNING   1876   Leith South

I do not see Mary in Edinburgh on the 1881 census. How do you know she was still alive?

Ah yes sorry. This Alexander and Janet are the son and daughter in law of the Alexander I'm struggling with. You found the correct Alexander marriage to Mary Gibson.

The death in 1889 shows Mary (his mother) still alive but Alexander (father) dead.

This may be just a strange coincidence but the only 1851 census I could find?

WILLIAM HOWIE   Married    MARY GIBSON   05/12/1846   Dunlop

WILLIAM HOWIE   Banns?   MARY GIBSON   04/12/1846   Stewarton

1851Dunlop Village
HOWIE   William   Head   M   39   Mason's Labourer   Ayrshire   Dunlop
HOWIE   Mary   Wife   M   32      Ayrshire   Stewarton
MCKIE   Annabella   Stpdau   U   14   Piecer In Wool Mill   Ayrshire   Stewarton
MCKIE   William   Stpson   U   12   Piecer In Wool Mill   Ayrshire   Stewarton
MCKIE   Alexr   Stpson   -   10   Scholar   Ayrshire   Stewarton
HOWIE   Robert   Son   -   3      Ayrshire   Dunlop
HOWIE   John   Son   -   9m      Ayrshire   Dunlop

There is a death for an Alexander senior but it is obviously before the birth of Alexander above, however there is no baptism record for him or the others listed above on SP?

MACKIE   ALEXR   Died    23/12/1837   Stewarton

I have not managed to find any census for Mary & Alexander junior other than the one I have just posted  and the 1881 I posted for Alexander.

Brilliant Colin thank you.

That 1851 census is his wife Mary re married and doing so in 1846 means Alexander senior died sometime between 1841 when his youngest was born and 1846 when she remarries.

Unless that 1837 death is him and perhaps Mary just claimed the two kids post 1837 were Alexander's.

Or perhaps he did a runner and vanished.
