A mysterious Nelson in Oldland Common
« on: Friday 31 December 21 19:50 GMT (UK) »
Continuing from my recent posts on California House , Oldland Common , I'm in need of any information on a man from the area called Archie Nelson . A family member who lived at California House when a boy and no longer with us , gave me brief information and I quote ' he came to us to live and my grandparents ( George and Harriet George ) were paid by his family to care for him . He was mentally inefficient and not allowed in certain parts of the house . He would often go to the toilet in the Crown and Horseshoe pub behind the house and buy things from Mrs Alison and her daughter in a house by the pub . He was older than us ( the family member telling me this info . was born in 1914 ) .
The only possible person of this name I can see on FREEBMD that may be the Archie Nelson mentioned here is - Archibald Edgar Nelson   b . Bristol 6a 140  Jun 1/4 1907  if he was born in the area .
Could anyone shed any info . on this man , his family , their role in the area etc..
There was a view by my past family informant that he was with the George family because to stay with the Nelson family would not look good in the society they kept . ( his words ) . Thankyou

I can’t see the Nelson family in 1911 - it would seem the parents are James and Tryphena.
Online trees show that Archibald emigrated to Australia and married there.

There is this record:
15th November 1924 Orama

Mr A E Nelson, 17 yrs Hotel Porter going to Brisbane.
His UK address is 15 St George’s Road, College Green, Bristol.

I see that Ancestry has the family as Melson in 1911, including Archibald, 3 yrs.

From the Queensland BDM:

Archibald Edgar NELSON married Margaret Bowman MCQUAKER 7 May 1931.

He died 4 Nov 1990  - parents: Alfred James NELSON and Tryphena Mary Rebecca HAWKES.

There is an item mentioning him in 1943 as a freemason

Modified to add:
A few other items on trove eg:

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article254181798 - a nice description of party given on return from their honeymoon 1931

Identified him - he is with George and Harriet in 1939 and shown as Archibald Nelson born 19th July 1881 (so much older than you thought) and as Incapacitated.

His parents were Frank Nelson (civil engineer) and Jane Ellen (nee Ellis).

His birth was actually registered as Frank Archibald Nelson in Sept.qtr. 1881 York (mmn Ellis) but he was baptised the following month at Holy Trinity, York as Archibald Ellis Nelson on 14/8/1881.

He is with family up to 1911 (when shown as 'Not Strong') - his father died 1907.

He enlisted in WW1 on 13/7/1917 (Labour Corps.) but was discharged 4 months later on 10/11/1917.   Report of Medical Board somewhat daunting - clearly he had a mental issue and also had 'Inguinal Hernia (double)' and 'Incontinence of Urine'!

So, sometime after 1911 census and 1917 he was put in the care of George and Harriet as his address is the same as given for them.   Then, sometime between 1939 and 1948 he returned to Yorkshire where he died as Archibald Ellis Nelson in June quarter 1948 York.

Well done Annette. It didn’t seem right especially when the emigration record was found.

Annette..well you've put the meat on the bones there . Fantastic very well done .
You're right , he is very much older than believed.Although not a family member of my past , having read the notes again recently , the character and name interested me . The toilet issue that he had , was a strange comment at the time and made by an older person with a childhood memory . Then you discover this additional info .
Rootschat never fails to amaze me...thankyou for your time and efforts ( and to previous responders )
Happy New Year to you all .
