« on: Saturday 01 January 22 19:27 GMT (UK) »
Born 1815 as Andrew Fountayne Wilson  and in 1826 the name Montagu was added.

I have him on the 1881 census living at Ingmanthorpe Hall Kirk Deighton Wetherby

Andrew Esqre Montagu head SINGLE 65 Deputy Lieutenant
Andrew Montagu son 28 Captain of Militia b London

In 1891 at same address

Andrew F Montage 75 SINGLE Esquire b. Doncaster
James Montagu nephew 45 Lf Colonel b. West Indies.

Can't find him on 1861-71 census.

A F W Montagu d 8 October 1895 in Kirk Deighton and left £1997099 - 8 - 4.  (Think I read this figure correctly!)
-------------------
1) Did AFWM marry  - in 1881 and 1891 he is described as single not a widower ?
2) Could he have been divorced ?
3) Did he any more children apart from Andrew b.1854 acc to census 1881?
4) What became of Andrew Montagu b. 1854.
5) Who did AFWM leave his money to?

Many thanks and all good wishes for 2022.

Did he marry?  2 census entries show him as single but have you looked for the son's birth to establish his mmn

You ask "Who did he leave his money to"  Did you check whether he left a will?   He did - so you can download a copy for £1.50

You ask about whereabouts of son after 1881 - did you check freebmd?  He died 1884.

I think you read the amount of the estate correctly - he presented a nephew with a £10,000 cheque on the latter's  marriage, which was then still counted in AFM's estate for the purposes of the new death duties

I've found a report of the will in the Times. £1.9m was the value of his personal estate - the "vast real estates in Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Northumberland, Surrey and Hampshire" had yet to be factored in.

Charles Wallace Montagu is mentioned amongst the bequests, as is the widow of James, [this is his sister in law] but no mention is made of their his relationship to the deceased. They are also listed amongst the "minor" bequestees - mostly sisters and nieces. The main legatees who get the real estate are identified as his nephews by his brother. I suspect James Andrew and Charles were not legitimate in some way
