Have you contacted the AWM to see what they can tell you? Maybe try enlarging or use magnifying glass to see if you can find stitched on unit badges etc that might assist further. Looking at your ancestors war records you might be able to match it to the rank shown on their uniforms- again AWM might be able to assist with that.
