Cheesegrove Ringwood 1871
« on: Sunday 02 January 22 16:38 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help. I am trying to locate an address on the 1871 Census on Poulner Lane called Cheesegrove- inhabited by George Culls (Accountant) and his family.
Ideally I am trying to find it referenced on a map or similar- but any clues would be great.
In 1881 it is inhabited by Arthur Hicks who seems to be a thriving tailor employing 5 men and 3 boys - so from both inhabitants in 1871 and 1881 it seems to be a reasonably sized dwelling. They are still there in 1891.

This is an 1870 map of Ringwood and Poulner, though I can't see a Cheesegrove.

There are a number of un-named houses.

You can see The Elms and The Manor House on the above map. On the 1881 census there appears to be 3 dwellings between The Manor House and Cheesegrove. And on the 1871 it seems the be The Manor House, the Keepers House, The Stables, then Cheesegrove. Still a bit hard to work out which property might be Cheesegrove.  :-\

Of possible interest:

"On the 13th inst. at Cheesegrove, Ringwood, Susan Mary, the beloved wife of William Chappele, Esq., manager of the National Provisional Bank of England, Ringwood, aged 41."
   Saturday,  Nov. 16, 1861
Publication: Salisbury and Winchester Journal

There are also some detailed descriptions of the property to let in 1819, 1820 and for sale in 1829 and 1861. Happy to send you copies if you'd like.

The house is described in the Salisbury and Winchester Journal 16 March 1850 when it is for rent as:-

A detached villa residence containing 3 parlours, office, 7 bedrooms, pantry. kitchen, scullery and two cellars - detached clerks office, brewhouse, bakehouse dairy house; stable with loft over, two Gig Houses, harness room, straw and cattle houses and other offices, enclosed yard and walled garden stocked with choice fruit trees.  Very pleasantly situate and known as Cheesegrove, near the town on the Southampton Road

I wonder if is now known as Grove House - to the south of the Manor House.  Grove House is only mentioned in the newspapers post 1900 https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/search/?q=grove+house+ringwood#.YdKLIFmnxEY

The map which goes with the historic England listing is here
https://mapservices.historicengland.org.uk/printwebservicehle/StatutoryPrint.svc/166595/HLE_A4L_Grade%7CHLE_A3L_Grade.pdf

It's no 61, with an unobtrusive little triangle on the property

Historic England PDF maps don't always make it easy to find the subject of the listing !
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
