Re tracking down people in Montreal, you may have come across this already, but just in case...

Lovell's Montreal Directory is available online and I found it very useful for following the movements from year to year of  relatives who moved there from Scotland. In some ways it is almost like an annual census for adults.

The Google News Archive also has a number of Montreal newspapers (not indexed, but fine if you are looking for an event where you have an idea of the date). This is the link (scroll down until you come to Montreal):
