1901 request for Sheldon family
« on: Friday 02 September 05 13:15 BST (UK) »
Hi, can anyone find this Sheldon family for me in the 1901 census?
John Sheldon 52
Sarah (wife) 50
John W. 14
Florence 12
All born Clay Cross, Derbyshire
I have added ten years on to those given in the 1891 census returns when the family were living in Derbyshire.
The males are believed to be Coal Miners.
Any information would be appreciated.
Al

Also unable to find in 1901 Census, however there is a death of
John Sheldon aged 47 June Q 1896 Chesterfield Registration District 7b 341 (includes
Clay Cross).

As there is such a large age gap for John W 4 and Florence 2 compared with their other children have you considered that although listed 1891 as son & Day. they could have been Grand Children.
There is a John W born Ilkest on 1885 living Nottingham.

This leaves Sarah aged abt 50 in 1901 Has she re-married?
In 1881 Census she gives place of birth as Holmegate, Derby's.

Good Luck.

Thank you for your thoughts Spendlove.
I think you are right about the death of John Sheldon Senior and it is possible also that your thoughts on the two youngest children are also right although my first impression was that their father had married twice and they were from his second marriage.
John W. (Sandy) Sheldon was definitely born in 1887 (also given in the Manchester United Alphabet) but it would be interesting to see what the entry for Nottingham presumably in 1901 gives as they didn't always get the years right in the census. he was living in the Nuneaton/Bedworth area of Warwickshire in 1905 and working in a nearby Coal Mine. An elder 'brother' Sidney, has been found living in Morton Entire in 1901.
Anyway, thank you again for your thoughts, I will study it all ago in more detail, Regards, Al

Hi,
John Sheldon = Sarah Bradley Dec. Q 1869 Chesterfield 7b 1036.

1871 Census RG10/3605 Holmegate Clay Cross
Sheldon John   22   Coal Miner      Clay Cross
"   Sarah          21                          Holmegate
" George H       10 months               "

So it looks as if John only had one wife. and George H was their eldest child.  This
probably means that John W and Florence are their own children.

1861 Census Hodgkinson yard Holmgate Clay Cross
Sarah Bradley aged 10 living with parents Samuel Bradley 47 & Charlotte 40 + 6 other children.
