Always a possibility that Christina's birth was illegitimate and her mother was Christina Sutherland who shows with her in 1901. If she was, her birth could have been registered under Sutherland or Mowat (father would need to attend the registrar's office for his name to be recorded on her birth reg.).

The 1881 census that is likely for her in Wick under Mowat has her with her maternal grandparents James and Elizabeth Sutherland.

Rosie asked this earlier, what info did she give for her parent/s on her 1895 marriage reg?

What about her death reg? What details were given for her parent/s on this?

The 1891 census shows mother Christina as unmarried:

Christina Sutherland, 41, head, farm lab. b Wick
Christina Mowat, 15, daughter, domestic b. Wick

Address: Mcphails Court, Louisburgh Street, Wick.

Not surprising, Christina, mother, also shows as single in the Gunn household in 1901.

There are two birth registrations in Wick for a Christina Sutherland around the right time. One in 1875 and the other in 1876. Nothing under Mowat.

It could be either one of these really. Have you looked at any of these?

Some family researchers give her birth date as 20 Dec 1875 in Wick. If correct, it could have been registered at the end of December 1875 or just slipped into January 1876.

Thank you everyone , just downloaded Christina’s birth document and you were right re it being registered in 1876. Can I ask how you came to that? Still learning how to knock down those brick walls.
