Judy we are distantly related, Anthony Oates who died at Hamsterley in 1799 is my 6 x great grandfather!  His son George baptised 1766 is my line of descent.

Thank you all for your replies. Have not been able to get back to you until now :-[

I haven't many Street names as most of the BDM's for Anthony Oates b1768 are just Ayres Quay. He died in 1839 - Death Cert says Ayres Quay. His wife Phillis (Nee Robson) died in 1842 at the house of her daughter Mary in Lombard St.
His father Anthony died in Hamsterley in 1799.

Anthony b1802 was born at Bishopwearmouth Panns. His children were born either Ayres Quay or Bishopwearmouth Panns. when he died in 1868 it was at William St.

I think maybe all the places I have mentioned are poor areas of town at that time.

Could he have been a 'day' labourer at the Glassworks.

Thank you Judy

I think Jomot had it from the start, it looks very likely your 4x great grandfather and his subsequent family worked in the glass industry, Ayres quay and bishopwearmouth Panns are a mile or two apart, going back before your dates both had glass works. Just above what was the Panns area are west wear street and a William street. Lombard street is around a mile south east of Panns.
Maybe something for you to reasearch.

That is interesting. I have George b1766 and two children in my tree. George was my 4x Gt Uncle
I have his wife as Ann - no surname.

Anthony who died 1799 I have no Baptism for but have his wife as Mary White. Have you managed to trace him further back than that.
Will PM you.

Thank you for your reply.
Didn't realise there were two Glass Works. I think the assumption that Anthony also worked in a Glass Works is probably right given a lot of his descendants did too.

Will keep researching to see if I can find out.
