One other interesting difference I just noticed writing this up.  The Cloonfinish records always refer to John Sherlock as a “Land holder”, but the Frass one calls him a “farmer”.  Could just be up to the registrar I suppose.

On the GeoHive National Townland and Historical Map Viewer, here's the hamlet of Fross shown in the Historic 25" map of 1897-1913.

...and Dromada (Duke) on OpenStreetMap.

The registrar should have written what was told him.

... Of course, this leads on to new questions — who is Catherine Groarke?  A neighbour or a relation?

Possibly John's sister?  A Cath Sherlock married a Pat Groarke in Killasser RC church on 12 February 1879, the bride's father was called Michael:

This looks right, but the Groarkes might be one family too many. I only got onto the Sherlocks through Anne Sherlock (Conway) who was the sister of my great aunt’s husband. It’s getting a bit tenous.

Is there a logical metric that suggests when you should stop?
