Washer works, heath town, Wolverhampton
« on: Tuesday 04 January 22 13:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi, in the 1911 census both my great grandfather (Albert Moore) and his brother Jack are listed as working as a tool setter and a tool fitter for “washer works” only I can’t find anything about washer works? I’ve looked at an old map of heath town and there are lots of works around but none called “washer” and I was hoping someone with either a bit more local or historical knowledge than I would be able to help?
Thank you

Hi, and welcome to rootschat  :) :)

My first thought was that it has been mistranscribed and should be Water works, but I don’t have access to the original to check.

It could be one of the many engineering works but specialising in engineering nuts bolts and washers
so may not be called washer works.
Tool setter is a specialist job and I wonder what their occupation was in 1901, may be worth a check.

It definitely says Washer Works for both sons.  Unfortunately they would be too young in 1901 to be working.

Washer Works is designated as "679" so I'm hoping that someone knows what that signifies.

679 = Other Metal Workers
