James and Richard Powell of Newent Are they related or the same man?
« on: Tuesday 04 January 22 18:58 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the parents of my 3xgreat grandmother Mary Powell. I am certain that she was the Mary Powell who was baptised in Newent on 13 Feb 1803, the daughter of Richard Powell and his wife Susan.
I have found two other children: Susannah, baptised 17 May 1799, daughter of Richard and Susanna and Esther, baptised 8 April 1804, daughter of Richard Powell and Susan. Both of these girls are married in London in the 1820s and 1830s.
However I can find no further trace of Richard or Susannah/Susan in Gloucestershire nor London.

Mary marries John Heaven in Cheltenham 24 March 1824 and in 1841 is with a James Powell and family in Awre with two of her children. In later census James states he was born in Newent in 1801. This matches with a baptism of James, son of James and Susannah Powell. I have been working on the hypothesis that the younger James might be Mary's cousin but am beginning to wonder if there is a possibility that they are siblings

James Powel marries Susannah Phillips 26 Feb 1797

Baptisms

Hannah (Hannah Powell, base born daughter of Susannah Philips baptised 31 May 1795),
Ann 31 Dec 1797 (possibly Hannah “rebaptised” now her parents are married)
Sarah 25 September 1805,
Richard 17 April 1808
Caroline 22 Nov 1812.

It is noticeable that my three girls fall into the gap between Ann and Sarah

Can anyone help me to make a decision?

Thanks for the link Capetown - I have immediately registered with them

I have already found James and Susannah in the census and death records. I have also located all the children mentioned in my post - other than Ann (which is why I wonder if she was Hannah being "legitimatized")

It is only Richard and Susan who I cannot trace. It is possible they moved to London or Cheltenham but since I have not been able to find any record I was just considering if there was a name change for a while - especially in view of the second son being baptised Richard.

There are connections with Awre re the younger James(1801) but, although I have traced his descendants, I have not been able to connect him to the older Powell families in the area.

Use the Soundex facility when searching a surname .....

When James POWEL married Susanna PHILLIPS - the witnesses were: Jonathan POWEL and Elizabeth GOODE.

Jonathan could most possibly be a relative . ... etc.

? The mother's name Susan on James/Richard baptisms...  Outside chance James and Richard are the same person.

There are baptisms (including in my family tree in Gloucestershire, where the mother's name being Mary Ann - sometimes the mother's name is written down as Mary and other times Ann
