William Smith B 1890
« on: Thursday 06 January 22 06:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  I have previously asked for help with Hubbies Grandfather William Smith,  now have the 1921 Census which states he was born 1890 Bagshot,  Surrey,  I cannot find a Birth the only birth I can find on GRO  SMITH, WILLIAM       BAKER
GRO Reference: 1890  M Quarter in CHERTSEY  Volume 02A  Page 5

The Baker Mother would add up but not Chertsey but as do not know the area, could Bagshot come under Chertsey for Registration District?

At the time of Census he was living with the in laws at 13 Winter Avenue, East Ham with wife Doris Mabel and child William James (The oldest Son born 1919).

It might well do.
I have Smiths in Chertsey
Sometimes given as Weybridge.
So all three places close.
Name  date and mmn correct so would assume  it  is he.

Banstead 12miles from Chertsey.
Thought he may have been baptised Banstead but cannot find it.
Bapisms of Smith... Harold, Donald Arthur,John Henry, Bertie and Sydney in 1890 but no William.
Birthplace are sometimes a bit out.
I have someone born Suffolk and on one census herbirth is given as London.
Banstead didn't come under Chertsey reg district....

Bagshot is a hamlet of Windlesham, which is in the Chertsey registration district.

I love the name Bagshot, must have been a favourite of Tolkien. (Bagshot Row in Hobbiton  :) )

This is Certificate received today,  I need to establish that this is indeed the correct William Smith (hubbies Grandfather who disappeared)  dont know where to start realy stuck.

Do you have his marriage certificate? Who does it say for his father?

(My grandfather was also a William SMITH - though born some 10 500 miles from Bagshot!)
