James Williams
« on: Thursday 06 January 22 12:41 GMT (UK) »
Happy and a healthy New Year.

I am abit confused but would a man marry his wife twice?

James Williams born about 1772 in Olveston Gloucestershire. In 1797 he married Mary Thomas at St Michaels Bristol, Mary was born in 1764, she previously had married a John Lippiatt, they had a daughter Ann Lippiatt Thomas in 1785,  I am not yet sure what Mary's surname would of been at birth, her parents could of been Thomas Mapson and Hannah Chitts.

Anyway going back to James I have come across a marriage in Little Dean between a James Williams and a Mary Thomas in 1813.  Should mention that Mary dies in 1829 in Olveston. James dies in 1856.  The family going thought the ages never moved all being farmers

Any help would be appreciated

With common names like James Williams and Mary Thomas you could be confusing different people with the same name.
What makes you suspect Mary's parents were Thomas Mapson and Hannah Chitts?
How do you know her year of birth but not her parents' names?
Have you found the record of a marriage between Mary and  John Lippiatt? It would give her maiden name. If there was a marriage, why would their daughter have the surname Thomas? If they married after her birth, why did Mary marry James in the name of Thomas? Could it be that she was 8 years older than James?
Is it just possible, assuming it is the same James, that both his wives were called Mary Thomas?

They would appear to be two different couples, as mentioned. On the first Marriage James signed his name, Mary made her mark x. On the second marriage both made their mark x.

Christening 3 April 1785, Thornbury, Gloucestershire
ANNE LIPPIATT Thomas, Mother MARY Thomas

So she was illegitimate it appears.

Ann married James BEVAN 28 August 1804 Thornbury

Possible Marriage Thornbury for Mary THOMAS to Joseph TAYLOR Apr 1792

Trish :)

I do find the early part of the Williams/Thomas confusing with different surnames etc.  So what you are saying trish, is that the Mary Thomas who married James is not the James Thomas who married Joseph Taylor. This is important as James Williams born 1772 (c) was my great grandfather going back.

There is a will of Elizabeth Lippiatt 9widow of Thiornbury who died 27 December 17990 in Gloucester Record Office which leaves a legacy to Ann Lippiatt Thomas, -
" in trust for Ann Lippiatt Thomas the illegitimate daughter of Mary the wife of James Williams of Olveston in the said county ( late Mary Thomas single woman)to be paid when she is 21; interest and dividends for her maintenance and education.”

There is a note on the bottom of the will to say Ann Lippiatt Thomas was born 9 Feb 1785 and married James Bevan on 28 Aug 1804.
Proved 31 Jul 1800. GRO Ref: 1800/124.
