Kanawamay or Kanawanay surname quest
« on: Friday 07 January 22 21:03 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone comes across this surname, I have googled it but with no luck. It is very unusual. I wonder if it is misspelt.

I have a Jane Kanawamay or Kanawanay in my direct line. She was born in Portsmouth in 1814, her father might have been called John. She married William Langridge in 1840 in Alverstoke.

marriage certificate says her father was James a Shipwright

What did they give as her maiden name for the children's births?  Or aren't they registered?

Neither William nor Jane signed the certificate.

Emily Jane Langridge has mothers name Boryer - Dec 1850 birth Portsea Island Union

William John Langridge same MMN - Mar 1848 birth same place

Have you the 1841 census?

I am looking at this 1851

George Bargent 27
Eliza Bargent 27
William Langridge 34 brother in law
Jane Langridge 37 sister in law
William Langridge 3 nephew
Emily Langridge 7 months niece

It looks like Eliza was a Boryer or Bowyer - marriage 1849 to George Bargent

Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Jane BOWYER married William Blake HANWAY
3 Dec 1838

I wonder if the K on the marriage cert is an H.

added - Jane BOWYER's father is James a Shipwright

or, if you said Blake Hanway quickly it might sound like Kanawanay  ;D

William Blake Hanway was a seaman, so anything could have happened.
