Would it please be possible to give an idea of date of this photograph from the beautiful dress and hat this lady is wearing? Unfortunately the face is very faded. It was with some other family photos that make me think it may be Jane Eliza JOSEPH nee FRENCH (1850-1937).

It is a thin paper stuck on a plain card, nothing on the back.

Thank you very much Jim, though it's very hard to tell I think that fits as the lady looks "middle aged", so if born 1850 it looks about right.

Not sure now that this is Jane Eliza. She had her first child born at sea travelling to Australia in 1880, and 3 more after that in 1881, 1883 and 1886. (The last two died as babies.) So if mid-late 1880s Jane would be in Queensland.

How unusual was it for a photo to be taken with no background, chairs, props etc?
