1921 Census codes
« on: Monday 10 January 22 11:35 GMT (UK) »
In the 1921 census a friend's grandfather's occupation is given as General Labourer - Ministry of Munitions of War - No Fixed Place.  The "No Fixed Place" is crossed out in green ink and "OOX" added.  Any ideas what that means?
Is there a list of post-enumerator added codes online?

No 00X on there but there is just an X at the very end of the list

Very many thanks, Rosie99, I had looked for codes in Google but cannot have asked the right question!  The link you have sent will no doubt help with other similar questions which may crop up in the future!
Best wishes,
Malcolm

Occupation Codes: A Dictionary of Occupational Terms Based on the Classification of Occupations

But as the the 00X refers to "No Fixed Place" I would guess was a code for unknown location used by the clerk before giving to the Comptometer operators / card girls.

Text below from 'Discover more about the 1921 Census of England & Wales' via Learn More at top of Advanced Search page. There are also tables of codes for various other things in the Useful links & resources box on the lower right.

"Before the census schedules reached the punch-card girls, however, each one was examined by a clerical officer who made annotations in a distinctive green ink. Presumably, green was chosen as the available colour it was thought householders were least likely to use when filling in their forms. Principal among the green-ink annotations is the coding of occupation, but you may see others in different parts of the forms."

The machines can be seen on https://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/how-findmypast-is-helping-us-provide-access-to-the-1921-census/
